The General Vibes

The “FGC” is obviously not one thing, there is no one discord server, facebook group, or in person community that encompasses everything.
Fighting games are not nearly as niche as people think, although it is still not a huge community. I’m in multiple discord servers for Guilty Gear Strive, and that’s just one game, albeit a popular one. I’ve seen a wide range of mentalities in my relatively brief time in the online scene, from gatekeeping new players to actively inviting people, from very kind and constructive feedback to people telling new players that they’re dogshit. However I find that these negative aspects aren’t very common, at least in the circles I’ve found myself in. The most I’ll see is friends teasing each other, both being in on the bit. What intrigues me more is how players think about themselves and how they keep it up. Things like people failing the Strive celestial challenge and saying “I’m washed.” Things like burnout, ambition, and the negative emotions that can result from both. I don’t want to focus on just the negatives though. This community is compassionate and beautiful, there is so much love between friends, so many rivals pushing each other, such diversity in its peoples.
I’m glad you’ve decided to read about them.
